Scout is a doe whose good qualities are really good, but her flaws are also really obvious. Her front end assembly leaves much to be desired – her front legs are set too far forward, and her front pasterns are weak. Her chine could use improvement. However, her good qualities are worth breeding up on – a beautiful mammary, with spectacular foreudder extension and texture – the legacy of her sire’s Chenango-Hills linebreeding – along with excellent depth, width, and length of body and rump. She is quite impressive when on the move. Scout earned AR stars in butterfat and protein, and was slightly short of minimum needed for production in her first freshening. We feel that Scout has great value as a brood doe, as her first kids were amazing improvements on her areas of weakness, so we know that a good buck can greatly reduce or eliminate them. We’re anxiously awaiting her daughter to freshen so we can see if she passes on her lovely mammary as well as she fails to pass on her flaws. If that’s the case, Scout is a valuable doe indeed. Scout is the easiest of keepers, and needs to be managed carefully when not in milk.
